National Food Day

We all eat food, we all talk about it, but we don’t celebrate it. National Food Day is on October 24 and it’s a day to celebrate all your favorite foods. Everyday might feel like food day because we eat it but, this was created by the Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI) in 1975. National Food Day also includes food nutrition and healthy foods to give thanks too. Thanks to National Food Day, food gets the thanks it needs.

National Game Day

Some people like to sit down on the couch and play video games. But do they all celebrate it? Most kids love to play video games over the weekend or summer. National Game Day is all about that from Pac Man to Angry Birds celebrating all your favorite games. It was created in 1983, and since the games were so enthusiastic, why not make a day out of it? National Game Day can be every day, but the original date is September 12. Now gamers have a reason to keep playing video games all day, thanks to National Game Day!

Green Apple Day of Service

By Jadae Bell

The Green Apple Day of Service is an organization that brings sustainable action and focus on K-12 education together all in one day. They donate to schools all around the globe and help their community. They came to our school last Saturday, October 9th from 8am to 12pm. It was also a perfect opportunity for NJHS members to get some of their hours in. Students, parents, and teachers were all welcome.

We planted small trees all over the front of the school and went to the garden and planted some new vegetables. It was a very fun and engaging event! They even had donuts and coffee for all the hard-working students, parents, and staff members. After everything was finished the campus looked brand new.

Interesting Fact

By Adalia Holtze

Did you know? The tallest man who was ever recorded was an American citizen, Robert Wadlow (1918–1940), he was 8 feet and 11 inches tall. Wadlow’s size was caused by his abnormally enlarged pituitary gland. “The pituitary gland is a small, bean-shaped gland situated at the base of your brain, somewhat behind your nose and between your ears. Despite its small size, the gland influences nearly every part of your body. The hormones it produces help regulate important functions, such as growth, blood pressure and reproduction.” (According to Mayoclinic.org). Wadlow was born and raised in Alton, Illinois, a city near St. Louis, Missouri. Unfortunately, it was Robert’s legs that caused his death, and he was just 22 years old.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

Last week: What is the rarest M&M color?

Answer: Brown! Eventually, on the basis of 712 M&M’s, he decided the color breakdown was now 19.5% green, 18.7% orange, 18.7 percent blue, 15.1 percent red, 14.5 percent yellow, and 13.5 percent brown, which would make Steve’s beloved brown M&Ms the odd ones out. Source

This is Not Something to Mesh With!

By Chloe Bray

Students, as the principal said, along with other TLAM staff, you need to wear a clear or mesh backpack to school instead of a normal one. However, some students refuse to do this. It is a school policy to wear a clear or mesh backpack. It seems like a cruel punishment, but this rule is for student’s safety. The policy was created after a shooting incident in another school in Florida. Because of this, the principal made sure that all students wore clear/mesh backpack to school so they can tell if a student has brought a weapon. This is the reason why you need to wear a see-through backpack to school. Also, do not bring a gun or any other weapon to school for other student’s safety.

If you or your parents are not able to buy you a proper school backpack, there are free mesh backpacks in the principal’s office. All in all, please follow the principal’s rule, for they are for safety and not for punishment.

Spirit Week: Do’s and Don’ts

By Brooke Carbbins

If you have ever participated in school Spirit Weeks/Halloween events (with a costume), you would know about the list of rules that comes along with your costume. Many schools have safety rules that you must abide while wearing a Halloween costume. For example, you cannot have dangerous props (knifes, guns, etc.), you cannot have a mask covering your face (so the school can know who you are), and more.

The rules for Spirit Week are the basic rules that anyone would expect. All attire must be within DCPS dress code compliance; No full-face themed masks for Halloween costumes; Pajamas must be in good taste and not be inappropriate. Inappropriate means showing your stomach, having short shorts, and anything going against DCPS dress code.

The events in Spirit Week are Pajama Day (October 12th), Wacky Wednesday (October 13th), Throwback Thursday (decades 70’s, 80’s, etc.) (October 14th), Halloween Costumes (October 15th), Dress in Class Color Competition (6th-Blue, 7th-Red, 8th-Black),  (October 18th), and Game Day: TLAM Spirit Shirts (October 19th).

Be Creative and Enjoy the fun!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Natalie Blood

During the month of October, it is Breast Cancer Awareness month. People are putting out pink pumpkins to raise awareness for breast cancer. Street wrestlers are changing outfits to also raise awareness for breast cancer. Flamingos will be placed on the front lawn and labeled for honorees who are breast cancer survivors, patients or loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer. Some clothing brands are giving back to breast cancer patients. It is important to raise awareness to breast cancer because it is very deadly, and many people are going through it.

Recommended Books By Jori Johnson

Hello everyone! Welcome back to Between the Lines! Where we here at TLAM recommend amazing books to our fellow community. This Month’s book is…. The Witch of Halloween House by Jeff DeGordick! This book tells the Story of a house that children call the Halloween House. Rumors reveal that the owner of the house is a witch. Scared and confused, people of the town burned down the Halloween House by May or may not knowing she was in it. Her last words were precise, but you will have to read it on your own to find out. So, get comfortable and ready to enjoy this book in addition to the autumn season!

Tech Design Elective

By Ayanna Turner

We all use talent for technology, but have we all thought about how we’re going to using that talent?  Tech designing class is the place for that. Not only do you put what you know in action, you learn new things every day. Although it’s an elective, Mr. Jackson always has surprises for each period, with projects ready to be drawn and sparkled with creative ideas. No drawing is bad because, it’s all unique designing, so the Tech Designing class is not all about knowing everything, it’s about learning and fun!

One current project is making a rocket and then going out to the breezeway and shooting it into the air. This is a class the students love going to!
